Two mornings ago at 6:15 Leigh and I were awoken by a police officer knocking on our door. The evening before we had received a note on our door warning us that two cars had been stolen from our apartment complex parking lot in the last couple nights. As many of you may know, Leigh owns an older Honda Civic, which are known to be easy to steal. We have always known we are at risk for being broken into, especially when we got the note on the door. But, some of you may also know, Leigh's car was stolen on April 1st of last year (almost exactly a year ago from this incident), and he got a club from the police department, which he uses daily, luckily. When his car was stolen last year, the police found it a few days later, it was still intact because the thieves had used it for robbing convenience stores. So, THIS TIME, when the police officer came to the door he said that he had driven by earlier and then when he came back around this time, noticed that his trunk was open. Leigh went to check out the damage and the only thing stolen were a few wrenches, and the club was on, but the thieves thought they might be able to get it off. In the process, they bent his steering wheel back and tried to get into the glove compartment. We were lucky and the car is driveable, little was stolen, and we still have the car. Here are some pictures I took the next morning of the steering wheel before Leigh bent it back.
You can't really tell, but it was bent up, the middle part of the steering wheel had come off, exposing the air bag area, and the club was bent enough that Leigh had to use a hammer to get it off the steering wheel.
Leigh's glove compartment has gone through a lot in the past year. When it was stolen, the thieves stole Leigh's registration and messed up the glove compartment enough that it can only be opened a certain way, which luckily, these thieves could not figure out, but tried.
Yesterday we got a club for my car so both of our cars cannot be stolen. I would encourage everyone in the area to buy a club or something to protect your car because we have found that no area in this city is safe from car thieves. We have been very lucky with Leigh's car. I'm thinking a new car should magically replace his car, and it definitely should not be a Honda.

Woah. That poor car. It's like a timex "takes a beating and keeps on ticking!"
