June 9, 2011:: Days 18, 19, 20

 Kendal now weighs 4 lbs. 15 oz. (I think she will probably be 5 lbs when we go in today)!! She is doing fabulous on her nutritive feedings. We started doing test weights the past few days and she has been getting 7-12 ml each feeding (which doesn't seem like a whole lot, but for her gestational age, it is). The nurses say she will probably take off in the next week or so. We shall see. She does a great job, is eager to feed, and is very awake for the feedings.

Lyla now weighs 3 lbs. 9.5 oz.! We are so excited that she is gaining weight and is getting up to the 4 lb. mark. We are thinking it is possible she will be up to 4 lbs. by the middle of next week--which means they will be in the same bed! Lyla has continued to tolerate her feedings and is receiving extra protein to help her gain weight and not be hard on her stomach. She is still on oxygen and probably won't be going off of it anytime soon. The nurses/doctors haven't said anything more about the reflux, but we do know that she has gone low on her oxygen saturation--so not sure what is going on there. She is still doing non-nutritive feedings, which she does extremely well when she is awake--about half of the time. We are hoping to start nutritive after Saturday (when they will be 35 weeks).

In other news, Leigh got to hold both of them skin to skin the other night! He was in heaven. And as for me, I have mastitis--NOT fun. The other night I was feeling extremely achy and I told Leigh that I felt like I had the flu, but with only the achiness blah symptom. We took my temperature before going back to the hospital and it was 100.2. I was super worried that I was sick and wouldn't be able to see my babies for days. We talked to the NICU secretaries and luckily one of them mentioned mastitis. So I went to the instacare and that is definitely what I had. I'm on antibiotics and I can still be in the NICU and still breastfeed the girls. I have spent a lot of time sleeping and resting.

 Kendal getting ready to nurse. I am doing her oral exercises, which help her tongue become better at taking deep sucks.
